What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is a medical system for the treatment and prevention of disease that developed over a period of at least 3,000 years. Acupuncture stimulates the body's own healing process and can effectively treat a wide variety of problems; both acute and chronic, physical and emotional.

Most people associate acupuncture with all types of pain for which it is very effective. In addition, acupuncture is widely used to address many other medical problems - diarrhea; constipation, hypertension, gynecological disorders, urinary problems, anxiety, depression, asthma, weight loss, drug and alcohol detoxification, smoking, insomnia.

Chinese Medicine view illness of "dis-ease" as an imbalance of one's energy. Acupuncture works by balancing the body's energy. By utilizing hair thin needles, the body's energy system is directly manipulated through balancing, removing blockages, or adding energy where it is needed. From a more scientific perspective, acupuncture can stimulate the production of beta-endorphins which are neurological transmitters that produce a natural analgesia.

Acupuncture is a safe medical practice that is regulated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Board of Registration in Medicine. Acupuncturists are licensed in this state under Massachusetts General laws. These include stringent requirements for sterilization of acupuncture needles, Licensed acupuncturists are also required by law to make pre-sterilized disposable needles available to their patients which are used only once before discard. The hygienic procedures utilized by licensed acupuncturists eliminate risks of contamination and spread of disease.

In addition, because acupuncture relies on the body's endogeneous chemistry, there are no harmful side effects from the treatment. In general, Doctors agree that it is better medicine to select the least dangerous method.

Acupuncture will not mask one symptom and induce another but rather stimulates the body to neutralize the disorder and establish balance.
