I discovered when I put the wheel back on that there was a bunch of slop between the left spacer and the swingarm, as if the stock spacer was a little too short. The gap is big enough that tightening up the axle felt funny and it made the wheel not turn right, too much resistance.
I found a a couple washers from the inside of some forks (F4 forks?) that happened to have a close-enough ID to the OD of the axle and stuffed them into the gap, which closed the slop down to almost zero.
The spacers are each 1.6mm thick, or close enough for this.
It makes me wonder if when the previous hackers on this bike swapped out the wrong left spacer when they swapped out the wheel (The original wheels were black, these are white), but that seems weird, even for the boneheads that "worked" on this bike before I got it.
